Running: PR at NB Power Race

Last Sunday’s race was a good way to cap off a very fruitful week. The race was the very much awaited very much postponed New Balance Power Race and it proved to be a great one.

I woke up early that Sunday to prepare for the race. I was already up at around 4 am to do my morning rituals and I was out of the condo by by 4:30. I quickly made a pit stop at Mini-Stop to get some goods. Got My self two bananas and a bunch of Gatorade for my hydration belt. Bananas are working for me lately and it’s great because they’re instant source of energy. I used to have a power sandwich for my breakfast for races and ave now switched to bananas. Looks like the basics really work best.

I got to Fort Bonifacio at around 5 am. I had just enough time to finish my two bananas and fill up my hydration belt. I headed straight to the starting gates and I could feel the sheer excitement in me. I planned on finishing a sub 2:20 in the race and I was already psyching myself up. I managed to bump into the very inconspicuous Takbo.ph peeps and was able to chat with them just before gun start.

It was another 3,2,1 ready set go kind of start and it kind of surprised me but nonetheless, I ran my heart out. The first half of the 21 kilometer route was flat. I managed to complete the first 10 kilometers in 61 minutes. I was able to match by personal best for 10 kilometers at that pace. I could have ran faster but took it a little more conservatively. I didn’t want to run out of steam towards the end of the 21 kilometer route.

Runners made their way down through Lawton road for the other half of the 21 kilometer race. Passing through Lawton meant passing through Bayani Road and the dreaded Mckinley Hills. Having been conservative in the first 10 kilometers really helped. I had just enough strength to get through the dreaded twosome hills of Bayani and Mckinley.

I was out of Mckinley at around 1 hour 50 minutes and I was happy with my pace. I paced faster to get a better time because at that point, I knew I had sub 2:20 in the bag. I pushed. I ran harder. I ran a little bit faster. I could already feel my calves tightening up and I didn’t want to slow down just yet. I could really feel how tired my legs were last Sunday in the final stretch. I was trying to pace faster but my legs felt so heavy.

I finally reached the Bonifacio High Street perimeter and the finish line was in sight. It was a quick 100 meters or so dash to the finish. I made a quick dash to the finish but midway, my shoelaces came undone. In the fear to doing a Jinoe, I tried to manage my stride and not trip on myself. I clocked in at 2 hours 13 minutes 58 seconds.

It was a great run. It was a great cap to a very fruitful weekend. It was brand new PR. Check out stats of my run here at Nike+, just don’t mind the distance, that this is bloody as hell inaccurate.

Here’s me goofing off after the race.

That’s me bloated.

Banana Man!

Thanks Rodel and Carlo for the photos!

Running: A Fruitful Week

A fruitful week indeed. I spent the whole week, Monday to Friday training and trying to lose weight for BLC. Four weeks have passed since the kick off of the BLC and since then, I have stepped up my training and revamped my diet. It’s funny to notice that this challenge is making me train non-stop for this but it is the only way to motive me.

It was indeed a fruitful week. Monday and Tuesday started off with some runs. I have dubbed Mckinley Hills as my secret training grounds and it looks like it is looking to  serve me well. Monday was a very easy 10 kilometer run. I did the same run the next day albeit with a little difference. Bumped into Marga and Gail and I had so much fun running the training grounds for a second time. Tuesday was a great semi-long run for me because I was able to ran a lot more than 10 kilometers.

Wednesday and Thursday came and I couldn’t really force myself to run everyday. I went to the condo and swam. I am starting to learn how to swim again. After finally finding my goggles and earplugs, I went off to the condo pool. I started off doing breast stroke and it went well. I was able to complete around 10 laps back and forth in a I don’t know how long pool. Nonetheless, it was a great swim. After much hesitation, I tried to swim freestyle. I made sure my earplugs were on really good because I panic when water gets into my ears. I need to practice swimming more. I need to be able to conquer my fear of water. Time will come I guess.

Friday came and it wasn’t any different from the past four days. I tried to do a tempo run. I was in and out of Mckinley Hills plus two rounds around BHS in an hour. Not really sure how fast that was but I believe it was tempo-ish enough. Hoping to get faster.

Rest day tomorrow. I need to get fresh legs for Sunday’s NB run. Hoping to do a sub2:20 or better.

Running: So Many Runs But Only Two Legs

So many Runs!

The next seven weeks will be all runs for me. September 13 will be a South area LSD with the Takbo.ph peeps. I had fun in my last LSD and surely, I’ll have more fun with the next one this Sunday. It will be part of my training for the much awaited Subic Marathon. Hoping to run more than 25 kilometers this Sunday. Wish me luck.

September 20 will be Rota Run. Takbo.ph has taken full responsibility on this run due to some un/fortunate circumstances. I hope this will mark the start of the Takbo.ph race organizing committee. I know they can pull this off. I’ll be running 21k here. Hope to break a 2 hour 29 minute PR here.

September 27 will be the New Balance Power Run. Here’s to another 21 kilometer run just a week after I did a previous 21 k. Let’s hope I don’t get burnt out. I hope I still have some more energy.

October 4 will be OctobeRun. It will be an easy 10 miler. Might push the distance run up to 21 or 25 kilometers after the race just to rack up some more mileage. I need to get a lot of mileage in my legs. I need to run a lot more just to know the feeling of running for more that four hours. I target a sub-5 finish and I hope I can do it with the training I am doing right now.

I am still contemplating on joining the QCIM though. Race day for this event is a week away from the marathon and I think I should be tapering by then. Will really be thinking hard about joining this one. Running the 21 kilometer race isn’t bad for mileage but it’s too close to Subic Marathon.

In between my long runs, I have some tempo runs around the village and sometimes in Ateneo. Let’s hope I can keep up with this training. See you on race day peeps.
