Running: Taking It Easy

With two weeks to go before Condura Marathon, most of the guys joining the Full are already tapering. I, on the other hand, am still trying to put in some serious mileage and serious tempo runs. I ran a close to 18 kilometers last Thursday to make up for my lack of mileage since Cebu Marathon and it felt great. The run was simple and easy; nothing too taxing on my knees.

The week ended with that run and before I knew it, it was Monday again. Even if I spent the day at home working, it was still a very busy day. The day ended with a lot of stress on my back. As the sun drew closer to the ground, it only meant that I’d be donning my running clothes again for a run. Running was my current outlet for frustration and stress lately and it has been really helpful.

I planned to tempo a 5k yesterday and the plan just turned out to be just a plan. I actually got to it really fast and I was running with a pace unheard of in my vocabulary. It all went crazy on my last loop around our subdivision. Just as I was starting my attack on my final loop, I felt a very sharp stinging pain on my knee. It felt like Sauron hammered it with his magic mace and it felt agonizingly painful; Lord of the Rings painful. It stopped me in my attack. I walked back to my house in pain. I slept and called it a day. It really wasn’t my day to start with anyway.

Tuesday came and it felt a lot better than the previous one. Work went much smoother and faster even with a little problems on the side but it never turned into something to hot to handle. Tuesday ended pretty fast and before I knew it, I was already downstairs in my car changing and getting ready to run. I wanted to make the run longer this time so I took it easy and ran at a very easy pace. I didn’t want the sharp pain on my knee to come back. I didn’t want to injure myself with just two weeks left before my revenge at the 42 kilometer distance at Condura. I ran my usual 10 kilometer route around Fort Bonifacio and Mckinley hill. It was all perfect up until I was going down Mckinley hill. The sharp Suaron blow like pain was back bothering my knee but it wasn’t as bad as Monday. I slowed down but I kept on running. Could this be because of my lack in mileage? Could this be my pact with the devil haunting me? Could this be the end of my running life?

It was a good thing that only the first question could be answered with a yes. I took it easy on my way to Bonifacio High Street. Thank the Lords that I made it in one piece. I should be tapering but I need to keep my endurance up. I can’t help but run. Please excuse me for being stubborn and hard headed.

See you in Condura!

Running: Traversing Fort Bonifacio And Makati

I had two things lined up to do last night. First was I needed to train for the upcoming Condura Marathon on Feb 7. The other was that I needed to meet Coy at Greenbelt so I can claim my Saosin tickets. I knew if did one after the other, I’d be finishing up too late already so I did it all in one go.

makati-fort-1

I ran a whole lot last night. 17 kilometers to be exact. I went down the office to change a little before 5.30 and I was up and running by 5.45. I was supposed to meet him around 7 and if I ran straight to greenbelt, I would get there early since Greenbelt was just a mere 5 kilometers away from the Fort. I extended my run around the Fort a little before going in Mckinley Drive.

makati-fort-2

I got to Greenbelt early even with some added distance. I got there at 6.30. With Coy still in transit, I messaged him to message me when he was there already because I’d be running around the area. I ran around the Legaspi area until he got there. I never knew that a running area existed there. There was a small park where runners could jog around in. There was also this big loop around the area that I ran around in for about 6 times. I took it easy running around the area. I didn’t want to lose too much steam going back.

makati-fort-3

After those 6 rounds, I finally got a message from Coy that he was there already.

Saosin Tickets! Thanks a lot Coy for the tickets!

As soon as I got the tickets, I headed of back to Fort. Mckinley Drive was the way back again and it felt much faster. I went down the secret training grounds to add a little more mileage and to fetch my camera from Kenneth. Over all, it was a nice two birds with one stone incident.

Here’s a link to the route I ran.

Here’s Your Chance to Meet and Greet The Killers!

Aside from running until my feet bleed, yours truly also has a love for music. With The Killers concert fast approaching, one can’t help but wonder if they will have enough money to get their tickets by concert day. No fan would dare pass up the chance to watch his favorite band and I’m one of them. I seriously admit that I won’t be able to gather enough funds to get me tickets for The Killers concert on January 31, 2009 and for the past hour or so, I have been trying to find a way to get me those tickets.

It’s a good thing Globe Tattoo Broadband has something for the fans to help them out.

Am I good Enough to Win Those Tickets? That my friends is me trying my best to pose with my imaginary Globe Tattoo Broadband stick. I went to my favorite Globe Business center a few hours ago and they seriously ran out of the new Globe Tatoo Broadband stick designs. There must be a lot of people trying to join the contest. It’s a good thing that stocks will be back up tomorrow so I can surely do my best to pose with NEW Pinoy theme inspired Globe Tattoo Stick.

Just take your best photo with the NEW Pinoy theme inspired Globe Tattoo Stick and post it on the Globe Tattoo Broadband Fan Page in facebook. If you get enough votes, you win the tickets!

Running: Chi Running

Running has been gaining a vast amount of popularity and more and more people are looking for ways to run more efficiently. I myself have been trying out new ways of running. As far as I can remember, I some how saw myself running with my forefoot and midfoot landing first rather than the heels of my feet. I never knew about Chi Running back then and I always thought I was a very weird person to be running like that. I kept on running the same way I ran back then as I am running now. I felt like an outcast up until I learned and got introduced to other runners who ran in the same manner.

I remember reading Bald Runner’s post about Newton Shoes and right then and there, I knew I wasn’t alone in the world anymore. As I got to meet more and more Takbo.ph peeps, I got to meet more and more runners who ran in the same way I did. I guess if you’re not really a runner, you wouldn’t really know about mid/fore-foot strike running up until you really get serious.

I kept on running with my midfoot landing first and it really kept me injury free and fast. The key to running lessening the impact on your joints going down and if you land with you’re heel, there is instant impact that reverberates up to your knees and it could get pretty painful over time. Running with your midfoot landing first makes running a lot more fun, albeit, bearable for others.

I was so happy to read about Chi Running. They made me feel less of a freak. Chi Running’s form really had some thought put into it.

Running: Cebu City Marathon

Cebu City Marathon was a lot of firsts for me and it was definitely a big bouillabaisse of mixed emotions. It was my first race outside of Metro Manila and I really wanted to make it count.

I took a late flight to Cebu last Friday. It was bumpy as always because I really didn’t like any other form of transportation other than cars. I was so relieved to land a Mactan Airport and I was immediately greeted by my Tita who picked me up. I had a lot of fun hanging out with my cousins in Cebu last Saturday and it really helped me adjust to the atmosphere of the location.

My cousin drove me to South Road Properties or more commonly known as SRP. It was a long stretch of road that ran along the seaside. I could smell the sea breeze already and it was an excellent change from all the pollution that I suck in over at Manila. As much as I hate water, I love the beach as much so you could really imagine how awed I felt when my cousin toured my along the coastal road.

Saturday passed so quickly with me touring around churches, getting my race kit, and finally checking out part of the route I was going to run. I slept in at around 8 pm to be able to get up early the next morning for the run. 4 am was the call time and I was up at 3 already. I took a bath and dressed up. I was trying out a lot of new things in this run and for sure a lot of people would raise their eyebrows at me. Before I left I couldn’t find my hydration belt so I had to make an impromptu purchase of a hydration backpack since I wanted to try one out for the longest time. I just broke-in my new NB800 in my last race at the Rizal Day run and running it for another 42 kilometers with out fully testing it out was another eyebrow upper. These new things would probably haunt me in the race and they certainly did but more on that later.

I was out of the house by 3:15 and was at the venue by 3:20.

It was quite a relief running into the Takbo peeps and it really helped churn away that hurling feeling I always get when I join races. It was a long 30 minute wait for gun start but the long wait was somewhat eased with the company of the Takbo peeps.

As with any race, a countdown was always normalcy to psych up the runners. Countdown started as early as 60 seconds. It was funny hearing the announcer counting down from 60 all the way to 0. The countdown was doing its job well as I was slowly losing the hurling feeling and as it reached half of 60, fireworks began to shoot up to the sky. The early morning sky was riddled with colors and booms and that surely got me out of my rut. As the countdown reached a big ZERO, a big boom came along with it and that sent off the runners. It was my first marathon alone and I wanted to make it count.

At 4 am in the morning, I was expecting a cool breeze to help me through the race but it wasn’t there. Running through the city streets of Cebu felt humid and hot. It was a hard, hot and humid 7 kilometers out of Cebu City and into SRP. I wanted to get of the the city streets so bad because of the heat but I had to restrain myself because I didn’t want to run out of steam towards the end.

I felt so relieved to get into the coastal road. One of the biggest reasons why I joined this race was because of the the coastal route. I didn’t want to pass it up. I loved running along the coastal road. Smelling the fresh ocean breeze breathed back life into me. I tried to up my pace to a conservative 6:45. It was a long stretch of road to the end of SRP wich took us to kilometer 17.

Half-way thru Cebu City Marathon

That’s me at the half-way mark, roughly 2 hours and 30 minutes into the race.

It was a joy to see the sunrise along the seaside. Definitely loved it.

I exited SRP at kilometer 27 and a finish time of 5:30 was looking well into the horizon for me. I tried to maintain and keep the steady pace.

I got into a lot of trouble at around kilometer 30. I started to feel the weight of my hydration back pack coming down on my shoulders. 1.5 liters of gatorade can be really heavy after lugging it around for 3 hours. To make matters worse, I inadvertently took in a power gel too soon and with too little water. I felt like hurling because of what I ate. I could run anymore with the big weight on my shoulders and the sinking hurling feeling. I tried to a slow run and walk dance but I ended up walking a lot more than what I had expected.

wasted at kilometer 32.

That is me wasted at kilometer 32. Q was cheering me on and with what little strength I had left, I tried to run a little more. This was the final stretch. It was a run and walk mambo for me up until I saw the best motivational sign yet.

“When you legs are in pain, run with your heart.”

Amazingly, I was able to run again. That was around kilometer 34. With 8 kilometers to go, I was energized again. I was running again albeit a lot slower compared to how fast I started. I was happy to be back on track. I was happy to be running again. I was happy to be in the groove once more.

I continued my slow jog up until the 40th kilometer. I could already feel my legs giving up. I wanted to walk already but a part of me didn’t want me to. A part of me didn’t want to slow down. A part of me just wanted me to put one foot in front of the other. At around that time I saw Coach Mar walking to the finish. I joined him and we walked the second to the last kilometer. Even though I really didn’t want to walk towards the end, I couldn’t take the risk of injuring myself. The heat got the best of me while Coach Mar had 3 counts of cramps. There was no defeat in walking because we would be back to take revenge on the distance a month after at Condura.

We started running again at the last kilometer. We finished together.

Towards the finish

We crossed the finish line together.

22339_243111709758_722939758_3023996_2968189_n I loved the race.  I could say with utmost confidence that Cebu City Marathon will the race to compare all races for 2010. They certainly set the benchmark high.

See you all again next year.

Loving the Mango Medal

I love my Mango Medal.

Thank you Takbo peeps for waiting for us!
