Running: Botak 21k – May 10, 2009

I ran another 21k last Sunday. It was the worst run I ever had. I new that I would have trouble finishing the run because I really didn’t train for it. Before the 21k, I only had about a could of miles on my feet. I knew my endurance wouldn’t last me the whole 21k. Being the crazy man that I am, I still signed up for the run.

Race day was very disappointing. Published assembly time for the race was  430 am. I expected the run to start at that exact same time but it didn’t. It started at 6 am already. I was there before 4 am and I had to wait a full 2 hours to start running. Race information was very poorly disseminated and people were just as confused and frustrated.

The time came where I needed to run. I ran a very slow pace and I thought that I could finish the 21k respectably. We ran from Fort Bonicafio and then up Kalayaan flyover. We went down to Beundia and I found myself in familiar ground. I ran that same route a few months back in the Codura run. This time, the turn around was only up to Pasong Tamo which then led us to the Rockwell route.

I really felt like I could sustain my pace when I was at about 13k kilometers in the race. I really did. A few more kilometers in and I felt a bad sting on my feet. It was like I was stepping on charcoal. Every stride I took felt really bad.

I ran/walked the rest of the course with about 7 or 8 kilometers left. I was very disappointed at myself. I should have trained more. I finished at about 3 hours and 3 minutes which is way way off my first finish time of 2 hours 29 minutes. I will do better next time but that will have to wait until maybe next year.

I think I’ll go and join a 5k again. I want to see if I can really push myself to finish below 30 minutes. :)
